Figured I should mention that this was inspired by the Ashes of Al'ar mount from World of Warcraft.

Breathtaking. Not only am I very impressed with the face and beak, but also with the simple yet effective shading you produced here that adds intensity to the already strong expression of the Phoenix.

Also, had you not put in your description what you did, I might have simply favorited it and moved on. Because you did, however, it expanded the drawing into something which challenges our preconceived definitions we attach to an idea so available romantically in all walks of literature, drawings and comics, as well as movies, and this truly inspired me.
